february favorites

Howdy y'all! As February is coming to a close, I thought it might be fun to start a new series here on B&B to replace the space that used to be filled by my Currently Coveting posts. That being said, I'm planning to start doing monthly favorites at the end of each month. Here's what I've been loving in February.

One of my sweet friends gave me this absolutely incredible Nyx lipstick in the shade "Doll" and I literally cannot get enough of it. It's a gorgeous color and it feels great on my lips.

Rebecca from the blog Sunny Rebecca posted about the Art of Pretending to Have a Life the other day. This post rocked my socks and so does Rebecca.

My sweet momma hooked me up with the "Blogging Day" mug from Francesca's that I'm sure you've all seen by now, as well as the new purple Lokai bracelet to raise awareness for Alzheimer's disease and I'm obsessed.

My favorite band Judah and the Lion just released their new single "Take it All Back". Can I just say, holy guacamole. I saw them live in October and I'm seeing them again in April. Their new album drops next week. They are killing it.

For those of you that don't know, I'm actually a part of the She Can Blogger Network. This month my "wave" was posting (you can read my post here) and I had so much fun interacting with all these sweet girls and reading their blogs! It was definitely a big favorite for February.

Friends. I'm a big-time planner nerd. I got my first Erin Condren this year and have been loving it, but mostly what I've been loving this month is my Ban.do sticker book. This company is so fun and if you aren't following their socials (and stalking them accordingly) you aren't living. Also, their stickers are bangin'.

The new Chaco spring line has been on my mind A LOT. I can't say I'm blessed enough to own a pair but, I mean! Look at these beauties! This pattern is one of my favorites.

That's it for a few of my monthly favorites! What have you been loving this month? Let me know in the comments below!!

Have a great day!

how i taught myself hand lettering

Howdy y'all, and happy Saturday!! In case you didn't see in my last post, I'm changing up my posting schedule to be Wednesdays and Saturdays instead of Tuesdays and Fridays. Most of y'all know that I'm a sucker for lettering and calligraphy, and that I've been teaching myself to do both. I started learning to letter probably a little over a year ago, and it has become one of my absolute favorite pastimes. Calligraphy is a more recent hobby for me, (I just picked it up about a month ago) but I am absolutely in love with it as well. I get a lot of questions regarding how to letter and how I do it, so I decided to write a post all about how I taught myself to letter.

For those of you that don't know what hand lettering is, it's essentially fake calligraphy. You write something out in a cursive type font, and then bold the downstrokes with your pen. It doesn't necessarily have to be cursive, but I think that's what most people think of when they think of lettering. You can also mix and match serif and sans-serif fonts with cursive to add a little variety in your designs.

The most important part of lettering is PRACTICE. Everyone that letters will tell you this so get used to it. Like I said, I've been lettering for about a year and I've only recently really got a handle on my pen and have become really happy with my work. Don't get me wrong, I loved the progress I was making along the way, but I've definitely improved a lot. Finding time to practice really isn't all that hard. If you're a student like me, I often set out another piece of paper while taking notes in a particularly slow class and just go at it. This might not work for you if you're a college student because obviously those classes are much more fast paced, but in high school it has been the best way for me to learn.

You have to focus on the shapes and strokes of the letters or you will never get it how you want it. When I first started, I would just bold out the lines where I thought I had seen others do it. That was a really dumb strategy. As you are forming your letter, really look at how you're creating it with your pen. Then find the places where your pen was moving downwards, create a guiding line where you want to bold it, and then fill it in.

Understand that you do not have to have good handwriting to be good at lettering. I myself am pretty fond of my handwriting and think it's pretty neat, but I know a lot of fantastic calligraphers and hand letterers who don't have beautiful handwriting. Also, lettering will probably help improve your handwriting because you'll be learning more about how letters are formed and gaining control of the pen. Again, I have to stress that because in order to learn to letter, you must understand how letters are formed and this has nothing to do with your regular handwriting because most of the time we just scribble stuff out without thinking about it.

You don't need expensive pens and paper to be good at lettering. Is it nice to have them? Sure! But honestly, I mostly use just pieces of scratch paper and my favorite gel pen (the Pilot G-2 Bold). Yes, if you use a cheap-o ballpoint pen you probably won't be happy with it, but you can get a pack of 3 of those Pilot pens or a couple Sharpies for several dollars where one really nice pen can cost $10!!

TAKE YOUR TIME. This is something I struggle with so much, but especially when you're just starting out, you have to go slowly to learn how to control the pen and form the letters right.

That's pretty much it! Lettering is such a fun thing to take up, plus all your friends will be super impressed with you and want you to be their personal scribe. :) If you already letter, what tips do you have for people learning to letter? If you're new to lettering, let me know what you've learned!!

Have a great day!

photography (and life) lately

Howdy y'all! I'm so sorry I haven't posted in a while, but I've been super busy and just haven't been able to find the time. Also, if you follow me on Twitter, you may know I've changed my posting schedule. I will now be putting up posts Wednesdays and Saturdays. I think this will fit my personal schedule better and help me to be able to write more content. This Wednesday, I decided I wanted to share with y'all some of my recent photography. If y'all want to see more of my photography, make sure to follow my VSCO!

This is probably one of my favorite photos I've ever taken. Plus it makes me look like a super cool hipster that goes to drive in movies when in reality it was just some gas station sign.

This was a night I listened to the Oh Hellos on vinyl and ate Panda Express with my best friend and we found out she was gonna be rich.

We did a flame lab in Chemistry and I was super nervous about it because fire, but then I took this neat picture and I was happy again.

My sister forced me into taking some portraits for her and they actually turned out really well. This was my favorite one.

In January I finally bought a calligraphy pen and I am in love with it. I took this picture the first time I ever tried my pen.

This was some work I did with my calligraphy pen the other day and also a super neat quote that I love.

My school's Student Council taped up a bunch of compliments up in the girls bathrooms around the building and it's super cute.

Last weekend I got to spend the night with my sweet grandparents. They are so so precious and I really enjoyed spending time with them. This is them with their new cat, Oreo.

For Valentine's Day, my momma always gets my sister and I a little somethin'. This year it was the Blogging Day mug from Francesca's (that literally every blogger is currently obsessing over) and the new purple Lokai bracelet in support of Alzheimer's Disease.

Some of my hand lettering letting all you babes how I feel about you. ;)

My sweet daddy is a Valentine's baby, so my sister made him this cake and we sang and I took pictures.

I hope y'all enjoyed this little update on my photography and life in general. What's goin' on with y'all lately? Let me know in the comments below!!

Have a great day!

february goals

Howdy y'all! I'm back today with yet another goals post! It seems like I've been doing so many of these, but I promise I'll take a chill pill on 'em now that January is over.

First, here's a recap of my January goals (which you can read in their entirety here). I wanted to work super hard on school this past month, and I think I did an alright job. I could've done better though, so I'll continue to work on it throughout the semester. Another big one was bible reading and going to church more. I definitely went to church more this month then I did in December, and read my Bible more. However, I still need to be focusing on this a lot this coming month. The whole situation with getting my yearbook crew back on track has yet to be resolved. We got one deadline in, but it was due in like, November so... I'm planning to continue pulling extra time this month to ensure that the book is on time and as beautiful as any. Finally, I wanted to spend more time on me. While I did try, it didn't really work out too well for me. But, I recently bought a calligraphy pen (y'all know I love to letter) as well as some more watercolors, and I think spending some time being more creative will help me chill out.

Now on to this month. First off, I would really like to start getting some exercise in and start eating a little healthier. I really, really stink at health goals (even worse then I stink at goals in general) so I'm not going to push myself too hard on this, just watching what I'm eating a little more. In terms of exercise, I'm not joining a gym or starting crossfit or something crazy, I'll probably just be taking my dog on walks everyday when I come home from school.

Next, I want to get my MYP project under control. My school is an IB school, which means all sophomores have to do this big cumulative project over the course of the year. I'm presenting in about a month and I still have to write an essay, do 10 journal entries, make a product, and ready myself to present it. So, you could say I've got a lot of work to do. I'm going to put together a schedule of when I need to have things done so I can stay on track and dedicate a little bit of time each day to work on it.

If you read my 2016 reading list, you'll know that I'm attempting to read a butt-ton of books this year. My timeline is to read about one book for every two weeks. I'm already off track (insert upside down face emoji here). So, I'm going to base my timeline off of how long the book is, and how difficult I think it will be to read. I'm hoping to finish the book I'm on and complete another in February.

Finally, we all know that February is Valentine's and most people either get all mushy with their significant other, or mope around and use the forever alone hashtag excessively. I'll be doing neither. I believe that Valentine's shouldn't just be about your husband, wife, boyfriend, or girlfriend, but that it should be about loving everyone. Your family, your friends (Galentine's anyone?), your peers, and your co-workers. Find someone to show some extra love to this month - whether it be your mom, your best gal pal, or that sweet little old man down the street that may need a some extra help.

That's it for my February goals! What are you hoping to accomplish this month? Let me know in the comments below.

Have a great day!
